Hilla Steinert, born in 1960, in Preuntsfelden, Germany, is a dancer and performance artist. She began her dance career in 1978 in Nuremberg. In 1981 Steinert studied with Deborah Hay in Austin, USA , whose work had a lasting influence on her own process. In 1986, after training as a movement and dance teacher, Steinert expanded her concept of dance and increasingly turned to performance art.From 1999 – 2004 she trained as dance therapist at the Frankfurt Institute for Dance Therapy.

I started with performance art in 1986. Coming from dance I experienced performance as an expansion of my artistic desires. Since then I am moving on the edge between dance and performance. I am crossing boundaries, diving into and working with the material, what ever that is. My main source is still my own body and its physicality, sensing, listening, leading to a spiritual body which connects the inner and the outer.
The world is measured, divided and assigned. Art offers me the freedom to question, to indicate, to manifest and provoke the unknown.

If there is something close to my heart, it is to make something grow. This is as true for art as it is for life. One is inseparable from the other.
