Brian Connolly at Belfast School of Art 175th Anniversary
Brian Connolly is one of Bbeyond’s founder members and has recently retired as an associate lecturer in Fine Art from the Belfast School of Art.
Brian will be making performance for the 175th anniversary of the Belfast School of Art - Celebrating Past, Present and Future. The School is the oldest school within Ulster University and this 175th anniversary year sees an exciting programme of events to celebrate the milestone.
It's turned out nice again with Thomas Wells
"It's Turned Out Nice Again" is an installation and performance that culminates two years of practice in East Belfast, inspired by local film director Brian Desmond Hurst (1895–1986).
This new work, located in Portview Trading Estate (formerly The Strand Spinning Mill), weaves together queer and working-class histories through seemingly incongruous assemblages to evoke nostalgic narratives. For me, It's Turned Out Nice Again (an anthem of Northern English working-class culture thanks to George Formby) inserts my Mancunian roots into the heart of East Belfast, reflecting the similarities between two post-industrial ‘powerhouses,’ to quote George Osborne! These similarities seep into familial relationships, gestures of affection, and influences of popular culture.
Exploring Distinction Through Time- The MFA
Exploring Distinction through Time: The MFA
The MFA Fine Art was the first of its kind on the island of Ireland and one of the first three in the UK.
Giving an opening keynote, world-renowned Irish artist and BSoA alumna Alice Maher, will share her reflections on her time attending the programme and the profound influence Belfast has had on her work.
Followed by panel discussion with Alice Maher, Dan Shipside, Susan Connolly, Tim Millen and Bbeyond member Zara Lyness.
New Commission at Belfast School of Art 175th Anniversary
Bbeyond New Commission artist Gabija has been selected to represent the organisation as part of the Belfast School of Art 175th Anniversary. Cork, The Ulster Museum Belfast and The Belfast School of Art. We will hear about how these lectures and approaches to practice influenced the creation of new organisations such as Art and Research Exchange a decade later.
Root to Crown is a programmed event by Belfast International Festival of Performance Art as part of Beuys: 50 Years Later at the Ulster Museum.

Looking at you looking at me with Rebecca Strain
A presentation by Rebecca Strain and Martha McCulloch on their recent body of work, as performance artist and photography artist based at Fort Dunree followed by a discussion about the relationship between photography and performance art over tea and scones.
Since 2023 Rebecca and Martha have been working on a project to develop a body of work that interrogates the relationship between live performance & image making. It is place-based art making outdoors that presents the reality of a rural, coastal practice.
This project they have been working on is a significant body of work that they feel will create opportunities for conversations around how we see our natural resources, the effects of tourism, the impact of artists occupation of spaces and the relationship between performance, photography and text.

Making Time with Bbeyond member Zara Lyness
For the final part of the 2024 New Commission art works, join artist Zara Lyness and complete ceramic jigsaws, inspired by locations in Belfast, focusing on themes of recognition, recollection and connection.
Making Time brings artwork into the hands of visitors who make time to sit, play and chat.
Time is one of the most precious gifts we can give, and this event gives visitors the time to share stories and memories and encourages them to remember to keep looking up and around them.
Participants need no special skills to join in at the table, just the ability to slow down and to share with others..
