Frank Homeyer

Frank Homeyer was born in 1964 in Hemer, Sauerland.

In the early 1980s he was intensively doing painting and photography in Cologne. During this time, he worked as an assistant and in friendship with the painter and mentor Fred Elser (*1922 † 2016), who stood in the tradition of Informel.

Frank Homeyer currently lives and works in Cologne and Würzburg. In the 1990s, his focus shifted to photography. On the basis of many years of conventional photographic work, he now concentrated mainly on photographic fine print techniques, especially with rubber printing. From 2000 onwards, Frank Homeyer worked equally with painting and photography. Homeyer has been practising performance art since 2004 and has continued to form of artistic expression continuously and comprehensively, nationally and internationally. Since 2018, the artistic forms of expression have flowed together more strongly. The motifs of the photographic works are mainly created on hikes and journeys.

After being reprinted on handmade paper and wood, these pigment prints are coloured and partly painted over. In terms of content these works are closely related to the performances and are combined into installations. The performances are also documented artistically. The source material for this is mainly photography and film by Bea Homeyer. These photographs are part of the artistic work.

Frank Homeyer’s work draws on his engagement with the natural sciences and psychoanalysis.

I developed performances as the second focus of my work, next to painting and photography. Acting and dance classes (Butoh) have fed into this work in the past. I develop my performances like a picture. Beginning with an idea or a subject I distribute the different elements in space and connect with time to shape the performance. It is important to me to include autobiographical references and to leave an opening for chance and improvisation in the process.
