An International Exchange Project Between China and Northern Ireland

Bbeyond Presents : Common Groundwork

Common Groundwork is an exchange between Guyu Action artists based in Xi’an, including other national Chinese artists and Bbeyond in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The purpose of the exchange is to highlight the Common Groundwork existing between artists from different cultures with the potential to open future dialogues and exchanges.

This common poetic and philosophic groundwork extends from ancient Taoists and Druidic philosophy, where knowledge and wisdom seem to transcend space and time, being and becoming more pertinent for today’s contemporary society. This common thread of ancient knowledge merges; wisdom with love and respect for all things, with creativity, reflects a model for living and making art, and is even more important in today’s world, addressing the role of art and artists in society. Performance artists cognisant of living a lived philosophy have the potential to become catalysts for change, something that begins with ourselves. A saying attributed to Gandhi; ‘Be the change you want to see in the world.’ is conducive for noble spirits and a good place to start.

Pan Chennong was born in Wuhan 1990. Graduated 2018 from Hubei Institute of Fine Art. My art practice was start from drawing painting and poem writing. Now I'm also play Shakuhachi as well. When I'm trying to touch art in whatever way, drawing writing or music playing, I'm always tend to focuses on process and action in moments. For me all kind of art work pieces are nothing more than trail of performance. And performance art also about love, it's a peaceful way to listen, to read, to watch and to feel each others, and also a peaceful way to be present who really I am for each others there.

Xiang Xishi is the curator of "GUYU AC- TION International Performance Art Fes- tival", since 2007, now in its 18 year, he is also main curator of the "Xi'an Biennale", since 2008, now in its year. He engaged in painting and per- formance art creation and is committed to promoting and developing modern and contemporary art in the Xi'an. Xiang graduated from Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts, 1991.

Lyu Desheng, born in 1990, he is an artist and a cu- rator. He created CEMENT PARK Art Project since 2017. He serves as Artistic Director of the YELL SPACE since 2023, works and lives in Shanghai, China. He mainly working on performance art, in recent years, he has organized almost 100 performance art events.

To be an artist, he always focuses on specific environ- ments. For him the specific environment somehow at same time is common environment too. He usually uses ordinary objects in a specific environment, in that condition the body feels and acts spontaneously, and his performance art are improvisational.

Li Mengyuan / Artist, curator

1971 Born in Xi'an, China. 1992 graduated from Xi'an Fine Art Academy. She studied at Peking University from 2004 to 2007 and obtained a master's degree. 2010 Taught at Xi'an Eurasia University. Since 2001, She began working in performance art creation and practice, and has been engaged in performance art, painting, and video art creation for a long time. Now Lives and works in Xi'an.

Sandra Johnston's artworks explore performance art improvisation as a form of porous interaction with the actuality of environments, open to variation, adjust- ment and affective responses. The physical somatic aspects of the work develop from an ethos of attrition consciously attempting to use a minimum of available resources, intersecting with a desire to leave no trace on surroundings. This approach of 'provisionality' in- sists upon a speculative relationship to the emergence of narratives and meanings being formed directly, and conjointly, between artist and audience.

Chen Qiuge is a young artist, graduated from Tianjin University of Technology in 2015, and had engaged in many performances art events and upholds her painting practice. She now works and lives in Xi'an.

Sinéad O'Donnell's work explores identity, borders and barriers through encounters with territory and the territorial. She sets up actions or situations that demonstrate complexities, contradictions or commonality between medium and discipline, timing and spontaneity, intuition and methodology, artist and audience. She uses photography, video, text and collage to record her performances.

O'Donnell often uses her body to investigate both her own and cultural boundaries, particularly in relation to the restrictions placed on women. Despite deliber- ately avoiding the sensationalisation of the body, her works often promote strong reactions and emotions.

Su Baiwei, Born 1990 in Guangxi, China. Now Lives and works in Xi'an.

Su Baiwei, graduated from Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts in 2013. He started performance art creation in 2012 and joined Xiang XiShi Center For Contemporary Art (X-CFCA) in 2014. Afterwards, participated in organizing contem- porary art activities in Xi'an until now.

Rebecca Strain is an Irish artist based in Inishowen, who makes weekly public performances with BBDB performance art collective on Society Street, Derry~Londonderry. These regular improvised performances not only function as Action Research but provide a platform to instigate change in the regular pattern of city life. Rebecca has been mentored by Hilla Steinert as part of Bbeyond's New Commission programme and wishes to acknowledge the following; Research Damaso Reyes, Sound - Hori Izhaki, Costume - Louise Harkin, Kathleen Spokes, Props Martha McCulloch and Sean McCann, Photo Martha McCulloch.

Wang Pan
Wang, 'The bridge' 2014 Shenzhen

Wioletta Ratajczak practice focuses on creating small scale performative devices called 'moment catchers', inspired by paradoxical everyday phenomena. She has designed sculptural costumes influenced by childhood experiences which she then uses in her performative interactions. she invented and constructed, among other things, a 'Braille-sound translator' musical instrument and the wearable '54321 Anxiety Method' device affect- ing the five senses.

Mirror is a performing artist who is devoted to creating contemporary performance and exploring ways to apply hypnotic skills to it. She integrates in her perfor- mance elements such as physical movements, installa- tions, multimedia materials, and hypnosis. She tried to rebuild a dream-world for the audience as to how dreams were structured, and by using hypnotic suggestions she guided the audiences to go deep and explore their sub- conscious world.

Rainer Pagel approach engages "social sculpture" and he became a co-founder and the first chairperson of Bbeyond, in 2000. His art comments on and berates be- lief systems, societal events, political developments, absurd ideas and conventions of communication and human interaction. He is interested in how the world in which we live changes while we're not looking, and how we then misinterpret what we have not seen but assume we know intimately and accept as unassailable truth.
